SAN DIEGO PRINT WORKS

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about custom newspaper printing for your event.

Getting Started

How does custom newspaper printing work?+

It's simple: design your newspaper (or use one of our free templates), upload your print-ready PDF to our website, choose your paper type, finishing, and number of copies, and we'll print and deliver it. Our system instantly calculates pricing based on your file's actual ink coverage — no waiting for quotes.

Do I need to design the newspaper myself?+

You can! We provide free downloadable templates for Canva, Adobe InDesign, and Google Docs in standard tabloid size (11" x 17"). If you need design help, we recommend working with a freelance designer — we're focused on printing, but we can point you in the right direction.

What file format do you accept?+

We accept PDF files only. For best results, export at 300 DPI with CMYK color mode and 0.125" bleed. Our upload tool will analyze your file and flag any potential issues.

What size are the newspapers?+

We print standard tabloid size: 11 inches wide by 17 inches tall. This is the classic newspaper format — half the size of a full broadsheet, and the most popular choice for event newspapers.

Paper & Print Quality

What paper types do you offer?+

Two options: Classic Newsprint (lightweight, authentic newspaper feel, most eco-friendly) and 100lb Cardstock (heavier, more premium feel, ideal for covers or single-sheet pieces). Most customers choose newsprint for the authentic look and sustainability factor.

Can I print in full color?+

Yes! Our RISO ComColor press handles full CMYK color printing. You can go full color, black and white, or spot color (like black + one accent color). Full color on newsprint has a beautiful, slightly muted quality that looks deliberately editorial.

What is RISO printing?+

RISO is a high-speed digital printing technology that uses soy-based, eco-friendly inks. It produces vibrant prints with a distinctive, slightly textured quality. RISO ink is non-toxic, petroleum-free, and produces less waste than traditional offset or laser printing.

Is newsprint really eco-friendly?+

Newsprint is the most environmentally friendly commercial print substrate available. It has a 73% recycling rate (highest of any paper product), is made from 80-100% recycled fiber, biodegrades in 2-6 weeks, uses up to 80% less water than coated paper, and produces roughly half the CO2 of glossy stock. Combined with our soy-based RISO inks (zero toxic chemicals), it's the most responsible printing choice you can make.

Pricing

How is pricing calculated?+

Our pricing is based on four factors: (1) number of pages, (2) actual ink coverage of your design (analyzed automatically from your PDF), (3) paper type, and (4) number of copies. Plus finishing fees if you want folding or stapling. Upload your file to see exact pricing instantly — no hidden fees.

How much does a custom newspaper cost?+

It varies by design, but as a rough guide: a 4-page newsprint tabloid starts around $0.30-0.50 per copy for 100+ copies. An 8-page version starts around $0.50-0.80 per copy. Volume discounts kick in at 500, 1,000, and 10,000+ copies. Upload your file for exact pricing.

Is there a minimum order?+

No strict minimum. You can order as few as you need. However, because there's a base setup fee, the per-copy cost is most economical at 50+ copies.

Turnaround & Delivery

How fast can I get my newspapers?+

Same-day printing is available for San Diego orders placed before 11 AM. Standard turnaround is 1-2 business days. Large runs (10,000+) typically take 2-3 business days. We also ship nationwide via FedEx/UPS.

Do you deliver in San Diego?+

Yes! We offer same-day courier delivery in Zone 1 (San Ysidro, Chula Vista, National City — $15 flat) and Zone 2 (Downtown SD, La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Coronado — $25 flat) for orders placed before 11 AM. North County and beyond ship via standard carriers.

Do you ship nationwide?+

Absolutely. We ship via FedEx and UPS to all 50 states. Standard shipping typically takes 2-5 business days depending on location. For large orders, we can arrange freight shipping to multiple locations.

Templates & Design

Do you offer free newspaper templates?+

Yes! We offer free downloadable templates in Canva, Adobe InDesign, and Google Docs format. They're pre-sized for tabloid (11x17) with proper margins and fold marks. Available for wedding, corporate, and general celebration layouts.

What should I include in my event newspaper?+

It depends on the event! For weddings: love story, photos, wedding party bios, schedule, fun facts/games. For corporate events: product info, company story, team bios, event agenda. For celebrations: tribute to the guest of honor, photos through the years, messages from loved ones. Check our specific event pages for more ideas.

File Preparation

What are the file requirements?+

PDF format, tabloid size (11" x 17"), 300 DPI resolution, CMYK color mode. Include 0.125" bleed if your design goes to the edge. Keep important text at least 0.25" from the trim edge. Page count must be a multiple of 4 (4, 8, 12, 16, etc.).

Why does page count need to be a multiple of 4?+

Because newspapers are printed on sheets that are folded. Each physical sheet creates 4 pages (front, back, and both sides of the fold). So your newspaper can be 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, or 32 pages.

What if my file has issues?+

Our upload system analyzes your PDF instantly and will flag potential issues like low resolution, wrong dimensions, or very high ink coverage that might affect print quality. You can fix and re-upload before placing your order.
